Any time of day or night, the programming on these networks are jam packed with the funniest comedy, newest Rap City music videos, and profiles on the sexiest new stars on the scene.

Now you already know, back in the day, there weren't many outlets for us to go to learn the haps on our celebrities. Everything was word of mouth, and what we heard about at the local salon or barbershop was bond. In the past, the networks that cater to urban markets, BET especially, have come under fire for what the public calls "perpetuating black stereotypes." Misogynistic and materialistic Hip-hop music videos where promiscuity and thug life is glamorize and "reality" TV shows like Flava of Love where mostly black women raucously vie for the affections of a seemingly uneducated, ex-rapper, with little manners or etiquette, but with some financial stability has black theorists uneasy. While entertaining, this form or entertainment is said to be the modern day Minstrel Show, where blacks make a mockery of themselves for the entertainment of others.

Others feel that these types of shows are simply for amusement and will not influence how blacks are viewed by the mainstream. However, do keep in mind that TV has always been intriguing because its gives you the opportunity to peek into the lives of people that you would not normally have the chance to. Are the lives of regular Black people as over-sexed and materialistic as the music videos and reality show imply?

How ever you feel on the issue, the media and large networks should take into account what they put on air for the public to view. In addition, parents should be aware of what their children are watching and emulating.
