New R&B Songs Break Records and Set Trends

Topping the urban charts this week is Usher's "Love In This Club," followed by Mariah Carey's "Touch My Body," Lil Wayne's "Lollipop," Ray-J's "Sexy Can I" and Keyshia's Cole's "I Remember" rounds out the top five.

Looking at this list, it is very clear that the line between Hip-hop and R&B has merged over the years. R&B or Rhythm and Blues music is the combination of jazz, blues, gospel, and soul music. Hip-hop is R&B's grittier more street second cousin. The merge of Hip-hop and R&B started back in the mid-eighties with the advent of the New Jack Swing sound.

New Jack Swing fused the samples, rhythms, and production techniques of Hip-hop with traditional R&B. R&B singers and R&B artists combining older styles with newer sounds is what facilitated the development of this new R&B.

Today it seems that new R&B songs aren't a hit unless a Hip-hop artists spits on the track. Some argue that it is the other way around and that a Hip-hop track isn't hot unless you got an R&B artist singing the hook.

From what was being played on BET Music, it seems that if Kanye West, T-pain or Timbaland didn't produce the track, whether Hip-hop artist or R&B singer, it would not be played. These three mega-producers were in such heavy rotation that there was some concern that R&B songs were getting stale. While these producers always dish-out fire tracks, it's sometimes necessary to hear from lesser known artists and producers to keep our ears to the streets and to stay-up on hotness to come.

That's the beauty of new R&B and urban music in general. The minute it is out of touch with the truth that is the daily lives of the people and culture that it reflects, that's the minute a fresher new Hip-hop artists, R&B artists and R&B singer with new R&B songs will knock off the old and come with the new.

BET Music is where we go to check out the new sound of the streets, see the newest videos, and basically get our swag back. Much respect is due to BET and the tried and true producers that keep our heads nodding and our whips bumping with the new R&B songs. The young cats on the scene like Trey Songz, J. Holiday, Soulja Boy, and Dream owe a lot to the path that has been laid for them by artists already making waves on BET.
